Wrap-Up of the Richland Park Horse Trials

Greetings!  Notice the time stamp on this post…. It is presently 3:01am on Monday morning!   After a great day at Richland Park, I was pumped enough to drive back all night long to get back to Kentucky a few minutes ago.   The only problem now?  Too much Mountain Dew and Red Bull to go to sleep!  So I’ll just have to share the recap of the weekend…

Sunday morning dawned hot and muggy, and the OI divisions were the LAST to go of the day…. We were estimating about 3pm.   We actually ended up show jumping at 4pm and 4:30pm, meaning we didn’t leave Michigan till well after 5:30…. Yikes!  It made for a long day’s wait!   My two horses are very, very different, and I focused on giving each one their very different ride…

I was thrilled that both horses were beautifully loose & sound this morning when I took them for their walks…. They were so perky!   (Unlike myself, seriously missing out on my morning coffee….)   Nemo show jumped first, and I was so happy with him!    The course was plenty big and on grass.    I focused on riding forward, as he is a good jumper but is a little short strided, so he has to move a bit to make the distances.   I was happy to get the distances in each of the lines, and let me tell you, there were tons of related distances to be had!  The course asked some great questions, and was definitely challenging enough, as most riders had at least 1 rail and several had as many as 20 and 32 jump penalties.   Nemo jumped really well, just having a single rail down for 4 faults.   He finished the weekend in the impressive Open Intermediate A division in 4th place!   Note that there were only TWO horses in this division to make the time on XC, and Nemo is one of them!  Of all the horses in OI-A, Nemo added the second lowest jump fault total (xc plus sj) for the weekend with just 4 faults for one rail, second only to Leslie Law, who won.  Also note the incredibly good quality of four star horses and riders in the division…. GO Nemo!!!   37  in dressage, DOUBLE CLEAN xc, just 1 rail in show jumping.  I’m so thrilled with my boy!

Hopper was also amazing this weekend!   There were only four double clean XC runs in all of OI-B, despite the world class group of riders… I was really proud that Hopper was one of those!  Overall, there were 6 double clean XC rounds on saturday at Intermediate of 45 horses, and two of those were ours!  Team CEO had 4% of the Intermediate horses, yet 33% of the double clean XC rounds!!!

Hopper was nervous in the SJ warmup, as he doesn’t particularly care for other horses in general…. He’s a bit of a grump around horses.   He was trying his heart out in the show jumping, and he jumped really big over everything.  He had one super cheap rub at a big oxer and the rail fell, and one rub late in the course for a total of two rails.  I’m still really happy with the round, as he’s still gaining strength and learning to have a bascule!  I’m proud that he’s backed down to a plain loose ring snaffle—a great accomplishment for the strongest horse I’ve ever ridden.   I’m really happy with his round, as everything jumped well out of stride and he was listening really well.   It was the completion of a great weekend for him, and it marks his last qualifier for the year in case we want to run Fair Hill this fall!   Overall, he had a great weekend with 38 in dressage, DOUBLE CLEAN xc, 2 rails in show jumping with a good round.  He finished 8th.

Howard was terrific to video all weekend, so he should have lots of video up of the boys in the next few days.  Thanks to Quin & Howard for their terrific help today!!!!    Also thanks to Meghan T, Adan, Sloane, Hayden, and Hannah for watching the farm for us so I could be away all week–you guys are AMAZING!!!!

Perhaps now I can try to go to bed….

🙂

YAYYY MEGAN!!! I didn’t have internet access this weekend, so am just now reading all the blogs, but I was following you by phone the whole time and reporting results to my travel buddies. Just so you know, you have 4 new additions to your fan club 🙂 I’m super proud of you, can’t wait to see the pics. Bevy

  2. Interesting weekend and an awesome finish in the middle of all the WEG riders and horses from BOTH the US and Canada. And not just riders – chef’s, selectors, officials. WEG team support members – Dougie was checking out potential team horses at 6;00 a.m. before the trotup on Sunday (he’ll be the US leg man for ALL US HORSES at WEG). As Bob Wilmarth commented privately, “there was LOTS of politickin’ (hillbilly term) goin’ on behind the scenes!!” And the spectator crowd looked like Rolex – rumor is that Buck actually JUMPED a spectator at the water.

After this weekend, I’ll make a prediction for WEG – Canada is going to field a very competitive team (well done, David!) and my long shot bet for a medal is Port Authority.

I haven’t seen Megan this focused and intense for years, at least since Radnor in 2004 and/or her first Training horse trial on Chief in 1997. I still don’t know what the issue was, but she went out of the box with a vengeance on Saturday at 8:12 a.m. and simply blew the course away. I’ve got a couple of small video pieces (start and end of the cours) where it’ll be easy to see what I mean. And then an hour later, she did it again – coming home on Hopper 1 second faster than Nemo (or maybe the reverse). I’ll post a picture of Megan steeplechasing a big table later. That was a BIG course, a lot tougher than the scores indicated.

Stadium was awesome. It’s really tough doing two great phases, being in good position (and the ribbons) on both horses, and then waiting all day. But rider and horses did an awesome job on a very difficult stadium course. I’m extremely proud of each of them.

Many thanks to Quin and Chelsea for helping this weekend. As usual, it was hang around hot, sweaty, and bored for 95% of the time, then insane activity to get ready to run.

OOOOOOPPPPPPPPSSSSSSS!!! Obviously, this post is by Howard, not Megan!! she was still logged in on my computer from Saturday, and I didn’t notice!! SORRY MEGAN!!
