1st Open Preliminary: Widespread Panic & Megan Moore: So far this year, there have been four horse trials in Area 8….    Out of those four, we’ve attended three of them, and our beloved horses have WON the Preliminary division in three of them!!!    Grasshopper won at Spring Bay and Greater Dayton, and (Not to be outdone) Widespread Panic walked away with a great victory today at the May Daze HT at the Kentucky Horse Park!!!     His dressage score of 32.7 left him stalking the leaders by just a couple of points out of first on Friday, with a good solid test…  His double clean SJ round on Friday put him in third place, in a big division filled with EXTREMELY nice horses and riders, many of whom have competed at the advanced level.    But it was his easy-breezy cross country round today that earned him a decisive win, having the fastest XC time of the day, and easily cantering around double clean.   (I never went that fast particularly, but he is becoming such a good cross country horse that I am able to scrub off every single extra step and not waste any time on the turns, or any time arguing….)   Only TWO horses managed to make the time–it was quite tight—Nemo, and our good friend Emery Reagan (congrats Emery!).  Nemo won the event by 7 points…   Finishing on our dressage score of 32.7!!!!!    There were 24 horses in the division, nine of which had competed at the Advanced level before…. A great division!

2nd place:    Under the Influence & Hannah Goodwin: In their first outing EVER, twelve year old Hannah and her new horse Under the Influence, whom she has only been riding for two weeks and who was purchased from Team CEO…. This new pair finished 2nd, just HALF A POINT off winning their division!!!    They scored a 38 in dressage and finished on their dressage score, with a perky show jumping and a gorgeous, smooth XC  round!  Congratulations on such an exciting start to their partnership!

3rd Place:   Nikki Burgio and Master Oliver: Finished on their dressage score of 35.9!   Double clean SJ and XC… They are definitely becoming a force to be reckoned with!   Congrats on yet another top finish!!!!!!

9th Place:   Quin Swiney & Riddle Me This: In their second horse trial together, they had an amazing weekend…. a 37.5 in dressage with a much improved test, and a gorgeous show jumping round with just one rail.   They were terrific on XC with a lovely double clean round…  Congrats on a great weekend!

10th Place:  Color Treatment and Megan Moore: Boscoe, at just 5 years old, ran his first Training HT this weekend!!!  He was so amazing… He packed Megan around like an old pro!   He was so good in all three phases, with a 37.7 in dressage…. He showjumped and went xc with double clean cross country rounds…  He was SO good, and didn’t look at anything!   He finished in 10th in a tough division, just three points from fourth place!

10th Place:  Holly Wiedemann & Journey’s End:   This wonderful pair completed their very first Training Level horse trial!  They had a great dressage test, just one rail in SJ, and a beautiful clean XC round with just a couple of time penalties!   We are so excited for them!

10th Place:  Sur Les Tas and Kim Hicks: Kim and Tas had a great weekend with a 34 in dressage, and just one rail in show jumping.  They were double clean on XC, and are really forming a terrific new partnership!  They finished on a 38 for 10th place in a super competitive division!

12th Place:  Emily Rosenbaum & Technical Difficulty: Our working student Emily purchased a young horse off the track last fall, and this was his first Novice HT at just 4yo!    They were terrific, with a really pretty dressage test.   He was so good in show jumping with the most gorgeous round, and just one green rail.  On XC, they were amazing, with a beautiful rhythmic round.    Unfortunately they were in the professional division accidently, so the competition was quite stiff, but we are so excited for how far they have come!  Hard work does pay off… Emily has a very talented young partner for the future!

“HC” means “Hors concours” or (my literal interpretation, not accurate but the way I think) “without competition.” Means you get scored but not placed. Typically occurs when your coach is judging or you’re the child of the organizer, e.g., a conflict of interest could occur.

  7. I think the “HC” at May Daze was because the rider in question is the significant other of the dressage judge, so very appropriate of them to have the score not count. A very classy & appropriate decision.

Thanks! Just when I thought I was figuring out the abbreviations, I see a new one!
